Deburr / Grinder

Summary: 

The Deburr/Grinder is responsible for grinding, deburring, and finishing structural steel components after cutting, fitting, and welding operations. This position ensures that metal parts meet quality standards by removing sharp edges, weld spatter, burrs, slag, and excess weld material as required. The employee must safely operate grinding tools and equipment while maintaining accurate dimensions, proper surface finish, and production efficiency.

Responsibilities:

· Grind and deburr structural steel components, including beams, plates, columns, brackets, and fabricated assemblies.

· Remove sharp edges, burrs, slag, weld spatter, and excess weld material using hand grinders and other approved tools.

· Smooth welds and metal surfaces according to drawings, specifications, and supervisor instructions.

· Prepare metal components for inspection, painting, coating, or final assembly.

· Use angle grinders, die grinders, grinding wheels, flap discs, wire wheels, and other finishing tools as required.

· Inspect finished parts for surface defects, sharp edges, excessive grinding, and other quality issues.

· Maintain proper dimensions and avoid removing excessive base material or weakening structural components.

· Clean and prepare weld areas for additional welding or finishing operations.

· Identify damaged materials, weld defects, or fabrication issues and report them to the supervisor.

· Follow work instructions, production schedules, and quality-control requirements.

· Inspect grinding tools and accessories before use and report damaged or unsafe equipment.

· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

· Follow all company safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Requirements:

· Previous experience in a structural steel, welding, or fabrication shop preferred.

· Experience operating angle grinders and other metal-finishing equipment.

· Basic understanding of structural steel fabrication and welding processes.

· Ability to identify weld imperfections, burrs, sharp edges, and surface defects.

· Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

· Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.

· Strict adherence to all shop safety rules and equipment operating procedures.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to stand and work for extended periods.

· Ability to lift, carry, push, or move materials within established safety limits.

· Ability to perform repetitive grinding, bending, reaching, and material handling.
