Safety Specialist
Job Summary
Responsible for implementing safety programs with a focus on injury prevention, regulatory compliance, and hazard reduction. Motivates and influences all levels of employees to plan and execute every task where safety is the first consideration. Coordinates with the leadership teams on regulatory requirements, timely internal and external reporting, and overall safety compliance.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Collaborates with management to develop, prepare, and implement safety policies and procedures
- Monitor and evaluate changes in applicable Occupational Safety and Health regulations and industry best practices to ensure company policies, procedures, and work practices remain current
- Serve as the subject matter expert interpreting OSHA rules and regulations for management
- Monitor the development of new regulations and manage company input into the development of regulations
- Ensures completion of required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting
- Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems
- Conduct risk assessments to minimize workplace accidents, occupational illnesses, or long-term health hazards
- Reviews safety training and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates
- Support and emphasize the importance of safety and health programs and promote regulatory compliance
- Assist the organization in fostering employee involvement and understanding of safety program objectives
- Influence a positive safety culture that proactively identifies and reduces risk and reinforces safety accountability
- Manage the development and communication of safety notifications and bulletins
- Identify and develop company-wide corrective actions to ensure that safety incidents are not repeated
- Initiate, assist with and/or review incident investigations and safety inspections
- Prepare monthly or annual safety reports and present information to management
- Provide safety-related information such as training sessions, emergency protocols, and proper use of safety equipment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of safety best practices and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards safety and health regulations
- Ability to perform comprehensive safety assessments and incident investigations
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to positively influence positive change across the organization
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to oversee all aspects of organization’s safety initiatives
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all levels
- Proficiency in conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
- Familiarity with writing health and safety policies and procedure
- Occasional lifting as required to complete job tasks
